My life

Between the margins.

Welcome to Marginal Scrawl, I’m Trish Murrell. I am sitting here in my living room. I’ve got my cup of coffee and my computer and I am settling in to tell you about myself and Marginal Scrawl.

I am a school teacher, wife, mother of two, and a lover of all things book related. I live in a small town west of Kingston, Ontario. Marginal Scrawl began in the summer of 2018 and as it was summer, I had more time to pursue new things. I taught myself to setup, record, edit, and produce a podcast. Sometimes, the demands of everyday life and work take over which they did. But, that’s not the only reason I haven’t recorded anything since my interview with the lovely and intelligent Ann Walmsley, author of The Prison Book Club. I suffered from a lack of confidence in what I had done and what I had set out to do. Mark Twain once said, “Courage is not the lack of fear. It is acting in spite of it.” There is much to fear in putting oneself out in front of an audience but I am going to do just that. In fact, that is the reason that I will be blogging here, on this site.

Inspired by Seth Godin’s podcast with Tim Ferris that my husband had shared with me, I decided to try blogging about all things book related. He has excellent reasons why a blog post a day is ideal but that is a lot. Godin says so himself. And as much as I like the prospect of talking ceaselessly about something I love as much as the book world, I will blog only as often as I am able.

Ideas in my world are like soap bubbles. Beautiful, glistening, free floating, and fleeting. This blog will be my attempt to have some ideas land long enough for me to look at, think about, and appreciate them. These ideas are bound to be happenstancial, downright random, and nerdily bookish. Through this blog, I will be sharing with you my insights, ideas, research, and love of books. Thank you for joining me and being part of my life between the margins.
